The Dangers Of Metal-On-Metal Hip Implants
A metal-on-metal hip implant consists of a metal ball that rotates inside a metal socket. Traditional hip implants feature a plastic socket. The metal-on-metal contact can cause tiny particles of cobalt-chromium alloy to break free from the implant components, introducing the toxic material into the patient’s body.
The resulting medical conditions can be severe and catastrophic. Patients can suffer painful infections, fluid buildup, weakening of bone and cartilage, bone loss, a condition known as osteolysis (the degeneration of bone tissue), and other severe setbacks.
When the bone erodes due to degeneration, it can cause the implant to loosen, causing the patient to suffer injury or require a new hip implant.
Examples of metal-on-metal hip implants include:
- DePuy Hip Replacement
- Stryker® Rejuvenate Modular Primary Hip System
- Stryker® Rejuvenate Total Hip System
