The Wage and Hour Division of the United States Department of Labor reported a 10-year high in assessed fines against employers in 2023 for violation of federal labor laws. The Division assessed nearly $26,000,000 in penalties, and concluded 20,215 compliance actions which resulted in $212.3 million in back wages.

Private litigation against employers also continues at a steady pace. Our firm was co-counsel in a case that resulted in a $7.3 million settlement on behalf of home care workers in Los Angeles who were not paid overtime. Ray et al. v. California Department of Social Services et al., No. 2:17-cv-04239 (C.D. Cal.). Our attorneys were also co-counsels in a case in New York involving home health aides who were not paid overtime or for all hours worked that settled for $5 million. Severino v. Avondale Care Group, LLC, 1:21 Civ. 10720 (S.D.N.Y.).
